Joseph T. Aoun
Joseph Aoun has more than thirty years’ experience in representing clients in the health care and insurance industries. He is recognized as one of the state’s foremost managed care experts, and he has been regularly engaged by the leading health care systems to assist them in health plan acquisitions, payor strategy and dispute resolution. He also has assisted publicly traded managed care organizations, private equity firms and local health plans in securing favorable regulatory action on a wide range of matters, including market competition and changes in ownership.
Joseph Aoun began his career at one of Michigan’s largest law firms, advancing to become a full equity partner. In 2000, he and two colleagues formed a boutique firm specializing in health care, real estate and tax law. In 2020, Mr. Aoun retired from the firm and established Aoun Advisors.
In addition to health plan acquisitions, payor strategy and dispute resolution, Joseph Aoun has guided leading health care systems in evaluating and participating in different clinical integration initiatives, including ACOs and bundled payment. He also has assisted organizations in the evaluation, licensure and operation of captive insurance companies, both on-shore and offshore. Mr. Aoun has frequently counseled health plans in connection with state regulatory issues and Medicare and Medicaid program requirements. He also was engaged in the successful legislative effort to modernize the regulation of HMOs under the Michigan Insurance Code.
Over the years, the Michigan hospital trade association and Michigan health plan trade association have each engaged Joseph Aoun for assistance on third party payment issues, pending legislation and market competition. He also has testified before several state legislative committees and provided assistance to the Michigan Attorney General’s office on these matters.
Joseph Aoun graduated magna cum laude from Wayne State University Law School and is admitted to practice law in Michigan (1987) and Florida (1992). He graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan (Dearborn) with a business degree in finance and managerial economics. Recently, he has continued post-graduate studies in economics and statistics.
